Ubud's palaces are intricately carved and highly detailed structures that shed light on the historical time of Balinese royalty. Ubud is a community settled by Balinese royalty and still populated by many Balinese high-caste. The four main palaces open for visit are designed according to traditional Balinese architecture and each element of the structure has symbolic and often religious meaning. Pura Saren Agung, also known as Ubud Palace, is the former's King's compound and is centrally located in Ubud across from the Central Market. Ubud Palace is the most popular location for nightly dance, drama and music performances.
Pura Taman Saraswati (above), located on Jln. Raya Ubud (the main street) is set in a luscious landscape of flora and fauna. A large lotus pond surrounds the main palace. Visitors can also enter into the Shine located into the palace walls to see the costume display.
Other palaces include: Pura Marajan Agung and Pura Desa Ubud, which is the main palace for local residents. Visitors are welcome to visit the palaces and take part in local ceremonies. Remember to buy a sarong and bring it with you everywhere! Sarongs are mandatory when you enter a temple or participate in a ceremony.
