ar_big_woodcarvingThe famous Italian sculptor Michelangelo once said, "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free". Imagine seeing the world through his eyes. Everything becomes magical, precious and sacred. The unexpected guests are angels in disguise. Lead is transformed into gold. Ubud is the art and culture centre of Bali and perhaps one of the last and greatest places to find the most gifted wood-carvers in the world today. The local village of Mas, just 10 minutes outside Ubud, is the main village for the craft of woodcarving. The manufactured products are sold in many shops throughout Ubud. Traditionally the craft of woodcarving was an expression of devotion to the divine. The finished objects were and still are sacred and symbolic objects, temple doors, figures of gods and goddesses, masks of revered heros, and such. Visitors can find anything and everything carved from wood. The Balinese craftsmen are able to transform  your photograph or vision into design as well. Just bring your ideas and bring your patience. We made a special order back in August and it is now February, but the design is "almost finished". To be fair, our statue was an incredibly complex design! Turn over time is usually much quicker.
