Bali's beautiful panoramas are created by water, as rain greens the gorgeous landscape filling the streams and precious irrigation canals. Yet on a closer look, you’ll see something not so wonderful - the flow of lifegiving water blocked by plastic bags. No wonder, with 750 tons of such plastic waste being produced now in Bali every day, much of it is carried downstream to damage the birds, fish, mangroves and reefs that are also part of our island's beautiful heritage.
In response to this cumulative but avoidable tragedy, a group of volunteers have started campaigning forBali Cantik Tanpa Plastik - keeping Bali Beautiful Without Plastic. So before your dreams of living in paradise turn in to a plastic waste nightmare, why don’t you join the movement?
One easy way is refusing those plastic bags that are offered for your shopping, and replacing them with re-useable alternatives. After all, those plastic bags are too often used only for 15 minutes- but take 1000 years to degrade. Here’s a few tips to be the friend Bali's beauty needs:
Buy locally made reusable, washable bags.
Remember to bring them to the shops!
Keep them on your kitchen doorknob and some in your motor bike or car so they are always handy
Put post-it notes on the fridge door, or even your rear-view mirror, to remind you and your staff of those VIP reusable bags.
If you do have a plastic bag- use it 1000 times!
