Ubud Vibe | Goa Gajah

Known as "The Elephant Cave", Pura Goa Gajah is a fascinating cave intricately carved with flowers, animals, ocean waves, and sacred symbolism. It was constructed from the 9th-11th centruy, but only recently excavated in the 1950's. Originally serving as a sanctuary for healing, ceremony and cleansing, the cave is believed to be related to Lord Ganesha, the Elephant Diety of Hinduism, whose statue is also found inside the cave. The cave may also be related to a cult of Lord Shiva. There were fragmentary remains of Shiva lingams found in the cave. Other claims suggest the cave has Buddhist connections. The cave is built in a steep valley overlooking Petanu River and surrounded by a garden of natural beauty. Goa Gajah is located in the west side of Bedulu countryside, near Gianyar Regency, just 15 minutes from Ubud. It is a wonderful excursion that will last a couple hours and well worth a trip!
