Two of the most unique attractions and best ancient sites of the ancient world is the water temple known as the Pura Tirtra Gunung Kawi Water Temple, near the village Sebatu, and the Gunung Kawi royal tombs (pictured above) located about 20km north of Ubud in a village called Tampaksiring. Located on the river Pakrisan, Pura Gunung Kawi, meaning "the Poet's Mountain" or "Mountain of Poetry", is an ancient temple built in a steep ravine that is enclosed by two natural springs that flow through the mountain. The natural landscape reveals a breathtaking cascading effect of flowing water that is deemed sacred by the Balinese. The natural spring water flows down into a pool that leads into a bathing area that is used for ritual purification. As the water continue to flow downstream, it becomes part of a natural irrigation system that leads into rice terraces. The unique flow of water from the mountain suggests it is a "Water Mountain". The mountain has taken on significant spiritual and sacred value to the Balinese who not only regard mountains as a sacred home to the gods, but who also value the waters for the their life-giving and purifying power. The site also has nine royal King's tombs, or carved burial towers, dating back to the 11th century that have been built from solid rock within the mountain (pictured bove). Like other ancient stone monuments, the monuments of Gunung Kawi are believed to be carved by the mythical monster Kbo Iwa, a giant from the pre-Hindu days that destroyed villages and people. This, of course, is a myth, but there are remarkable stories and people remaining of the ancient society called the Bali Aga in Bali today who will testify to this truth!
