While backpacking has changed from the good old days of finding home-cooked curries, lentil soups and delicious daal, and comfortable accommodation for only a few dollars a day, there are still a few special places that remain a low-budget haven for backpackers, hippies, bohemians, artists and new age healers. Ubud is one of those small villages where you can travel on a budget and still find peaceful accommodation, with breakfast included, and delicious foods, all while finding time and money to have a deep tissue massage and your aura cleansed with pure essential oils! Backpacking in Ubud is very easy. You can walk through the whole village in one day and be back to relax in your hammock in the early evening. The best low-budget way to travel is by waving down a Bemo, the local transport bus.Check out the Transport section for more alternatives.

There are plenty of home-stays and village bungalows available for a low price that are located behind the central streets. Some families will let you stay with them in their village compound. You must provide your passport before signing into a guest house. Remember to visit a few villas or guest houses BEFORE you sign anything and before you promise anything! The Balinese culture values the "word" as they value rice! Just say "no promise, but I may come back". When you agree to sign in, bargain for the lowest price again and again and again.

  • There should be no registration fees when you sign up or register for accommodation.
  • Ask if the accommodation has hot water
  • Ask if breakfast is provided
  • Ask if they have Wifi

Low Budget Restaurants

As for low budget food, the best alternative is to go outside of Central Ubud, where the prices have soared to Western prices. You can find many local "warungs" where you can choose your foods from the various choices in the window. Prices are set at "local" Balinese prices and most meals range from 5000 Rp to 15,000 Rp.
