Pura Tirta Empul is what the Ganges is to India! Situated just north of Tampaksiring, Pura Tirta Empul is a shrine for purification built in the natural springs. It is one of the most sacred sights in all of Bali due to the religious belief that the waters have supernatural healing power that can both heal and purify the ailments of mind, body and spirit. The elaborate spring system flows into the two central pools that are used for bathing or purification (above). Each spring represents a different form of purification.

The original Pura was built over 1000 year ago in approximately 960. The site has been extensively restored due to natural decay over time in Bali's tropical climate.

Tourists are welcome to bathe in the sacred waters, but proper attire is mandatory. All visitors must wear a sarong, sash and shirt when bathing in the pools.
