Bemo
  • 5000 Rp for short Journeys (Ubud to Gianyar Market)

ar_med_bemo

The "Bemo" is the local minibus that runs to all the main villages and markets in and outside Ubud. This is the cheapest way to get in and outside the center. Main pick up and drop off points are typically located at the center markets. Your travel experience will be rather rough. If you enjoy participating in the culture, this ride will be a perfect way to experience true Balinese lifestyle. You can "flag" down a Bemo almost anywhere in Ubud. They are typically brown older vans that may or may not have air-conditioning.

Car Rental

  • 80,000-90,000 Rp/Day for average Jeep (Gas not included)
  • 100,000-220,000 Rp/Day for nicer car (Gas not included)
  • 1,500,000-2,000,000 Rp/Day for luxury cars (Gas not included)

Renting a car is an easy and cost-efficient alternative to hiring a personal driver. Driving is "England-style", with the driving directions opposite to the West. Car rental gives you the most freedom and it is almost impossible to get lost in Bali. Every local Balinese will direct you to the main roads. To drive in Bali, you must have a valid International Driver's license. There are drawbacks to driving in a foreign country. It is risky and most drivers are not as skilled as they are in the west. Remember to test-drive the car before renting.

Motorcycles

  • 20,000 - 40,000 Rp/Day
  • 10,000 to fill up tank
Perhaps one of the easiet, but deadliest way to get in and aroud Ubud is by motocycle. This alternative is not recommended as many tourists are killed each year in traffic accidents or spend their vacation in the hospital. This is an extremely unsafe method of transport, and most motocycle drivers offering transport do not provide you with a helmet. If this is your chosen method of transport, remember to wear a top quality "INK" helmet and drive very slowly and carefully. Tell the driver "hati-hati", meaning "be careful", or "pelan-pelan", meaning "slowly-slowly". A valid International Driver's license is required. Tourists on motorbike are stopped by the police often and must pay a price. It is wise to avoid all this trouble and realize that life is not worth the risk of riding a motorcycle.

Taxi

There are no metered taxis in Ubud. Visitors may rent transport or hire a personal driver.

Traveling on Bicycle

20,000-30,000 Rp/Day

One of the most enjoyable ways to travel in and around Ubud is by bicycle. Many tourist offices have bicycle rental for a very cheap price. Helmets are provided and there are very few hills to travel upwards. Many travelers even opt to rent a bicycle for a "long journey", some even traveling around the all of Bali! Most bikes for rent are sturdy mountain bikes, which are a light and strong means of transport.

Perama Shuttle Bus (Jln. Hanoman, (0361 97331)

Travel by shuttle bus is a low-cost and extremely enjoyable means of transport. You can meet other local travellers and travel comfortably in an air-conditioned bus. Travel times are efficient and the Perama bus travels quite often. Perama travels to most destinations in Bali and this will save you money on hiring a personal driver.

Personal Driver

One of the most common phrases heard in Ubud is "transport"! Drivers offer you a negotiable price. Most drivers provide excellent service in well-maintained vehicles that have air-conditioning. Drivers will pick you up at your departure point on time and wait for you during your travel. Finding a driver is very easy, but finding a fair driver is more challenging. Some drivers charge an escalated "tourist" rate for short and long distances. Remember to bargain at least 3 times cheaper and demand the "arga benar", "fair price".
